03 September 2018: The South African Meat Processors Association (SAMPA) is pleased with the latest pronouncement from the Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi which confirms that the listeria outbreak is over.
The Minister has confirmed that processed meats are safe to eat. We have worked closely with the Department to put food safety standards in place and we have made very specific recommendations in this regard. Although the listeria outbreak is over, we will continue to collaborate with all our stakeholders on best practice.
Our members follow global best practice standards on hygiene with SAMPA having adopted HACCP as a compulsory food safety management programme in 2018. We will continue to stipulate adherence to HACCP as the industry standard for all SAMPA members.
We prioritise food safety as industry association, we also urge consumers, retailers and informal traders to follow food safety practices in the handling of all ready-to-eat (RTE) products of which processed meat is but one category.
